Remembering Elizabeth Taylor with Napoleon Perdis
Thanks to my mother and grandmother, I grew up idolizing Elizabeth Taylor. Here violet eyes, wicked winged liner, multiple affairs with leading men…Whether her moments were sensational or scandalous, she definitely embodied all that is a Hollywood star and everything that was timelessly glamorous. As a teenager, I had the full intention of becoming the next Liz Taylor. Multiple marriages and a savings fund for purple contacts were definite life goals at the time. (FYI: Quite bittersweet, none of those things happened.) Alas, there can only be and will only be one Elizabeth Taylor in this world. Fans like me can only be so lucky that we inherit the ability to recreate her signature exquisite look with these tips and tricks from modern day makeup artists to the stars, Napoleon Perdis.
Black Eyeliner
Napoleon Perdis Neo Noir Eyeliner ($20)
You can’t work and wow the crowd like Liz without those beautiful eyes being emphasized by sultry, winged black liner.Napoleon’s Tip – Use it to create an exaggerated cat eye, or make a subtler statement. The super soft applicator tip means mistake proof lining, while the intense black color is buildable for more drama at night .
Violet Eyes
Color Disc in High Voltage Violet ($25)
Though we can’t all have violet eyes, we can all have violet eyeshadow. This pick is as luxurious as it is bright! Napoleon’s Tip – Before applying to lids, prep the base with a concealer to guarantee color longevity; always use a eye shadow brush to evenly distribute onto the eyes for minimal fallout .
Red Lips
Devine Goddess Lipstick ($22) in Xenia
Red lips are hard to master, but once you do, you can guarantee that you will be turning heads in this signature Liz Taylor shade. Napoleon’s Tip – Apply your lipstick and then use a pencil to line around the edges. The liner will glide on more smoothly, leaving a more natural outline but still preventing the lip color from bleeding
Rest with angels Elizabeth Taylor and thank you for touching so many hearts with your beauty and talent. No doubt the images and masterpieces of the star will live on forever.
Pantene’s Nature Fusion: Justin Bieber Made Me Do it
Disclosure: I am not a fan of Justin Bieber. Though I find his songs catchy and multiple talents captivating, I have no interest in him or his career because he is like 10 years old and I am 100. He is also very hard not to notice since he and his fans are, like, everywhere.
It hit me at a very wulnerable moment. I had the opportunity to order a few toiletries on drugstore.com and was in dire need of a shampoo and conditioner stock up. As I was searching online for hair products that I don’t already have, haven’t used, and will provide me the most bang for my buck, I saw an image of Justin Bieber pop up with this bag of Proactiv products and Pantene:
A mental trigger came about and I thought, “Hmmm…Why not give Pantene another whirl?” I’ve used Pantene many moons ago before their tremendous bottle/product makeover and I liked it. I also have never tried any of the new stuff. Oh! and Nature Fusion? That sounds neat. The green cap looks pretty cool, too. Let’s do it. Thanks for the idea, Justin.
So I ordered the product.
I made three mistakes.
1. Like the silly girl I am that doesn’t wear glasses when I need them and should, I bought two non-matching shampoos and conditioners. I purchased the Moisture Balance Shampoo and the Smooth Vitality Conditioner. There is quite the possibility that this mismatch may be key as to why my experience with the Nature Fusion line is crap. Maybe there is some kind of secret biochemical connection between shampoos and conditioners wherein when combined incorrectly hair dissapointment ensues. I don’t know. Just guessing for the benefit of the doubt.
2. I took hair advice from Justin Bieber. Dude. What was I thinking? They say steal the secrets from the people you admire and look up to. This is why we pine and purge through magazines and websites…in order to find out what our favorite celebs are using. I should have looked to see what Jessica Alba uses or Katy Perry. I like their hair. Justin Bieber??? WTF?
The shampoo is okay. Nothing fancy. It smells great and washes nice. It’s just okay. The conditioner on the other hand is greasy, it’s really greasy. With all that lotion, it does nothing for my frizz, it doesn’t detangle as much as I’d like it to, and when I rinse the greasiness gets everywhere – making the floor all slippery. Which means I come close to a possible concussion every shower. Not a fan… And my third mistake? I bought the large sizes.
Really, Pantene’s Nature Fusion is not that bad. If you want a super simple shampoo and an extra greasy conditioner than this could work for you. I have high expectations for my hair products, if anything I make sure my shampoos and conditioners come as close as possible to life-changing incredibleness. Which is possible, btw.
So, Sorry Pantene Nature Fusion. I won’t be making a second go here… and to Justin Bieber: This is the first and last time I am taking ANY beauty advice from you.
OMG! I love this dress: Brittany Snow in French Connection
Brittany Snow stepped out with the newly single hot man, Zac Efron. But what grabbed my attention more than the Hollywood hunk was her adorable, adorable, adorable dress. Brittany is wearing the French Connection Graingers Glitter Dress and it is easily available to me mortals like ourselves. Definitely worth the price tag for fancy events. I love it in cream but I think it is even better in black! ($298 at Bloomingdales)
House of Harlow 1960: Starting My Year Off with a Bang-le!
Since forever, I’ve had this tradition where each new year, I go on an absolute OCD-like shopping frenzy for a piece of jewelry that will somewhat define and commemorate my year to come. Somewhat like Carrie Bradshaw with her “Carrie” necklace, I go about the next destined 365 days wearing it until it falls off into pieces, gets lost or stolen, (boo!) or – if I’m most lucky – when the next new year comes and I get to stash it away forever. Throughout the years, this tradition has morphed into an irreplaceable jewelry box that is like a scrapbook or photo album of experiences past. Wherein, each piece possesses a meaning and sentimental value, worth far beyond any price tag.
The necklace/bangle/ring becomes part fashion statement and part good luck charm. And since this very important bauble is going to be my companion for the next 12 months, there is a pretty strict note of criteria that accompanies it: The object must be extremely sturdy, comfortable, priced in a practical price point, and blend with almost every outfit I will wear. After a long list of possible VIB’s, my heart finally set itself on (drum roll, please…) House of Harlow 1960’s Black Stack Bangle.
Ready for work or play, night or day, the Black Stack Bangle lends itself a little bohemian chic with black stones around its rim, and a bit of rebellion with an unexpected leather strap covering the solid 14k gold base. Alone or stacked with old and new favorites, I could definitely see an entire year of never taking this off. With House of Harlow 1960, Who What Wear Fashion MVP of 2010 Nicole Richie, has not only made an extremely refreshing and unique jewelry line that became an instant celebrity hit, the pieces are incredibly timeless, original, and eclectic. Here are a few more pieces that you might make your 2011 VIB: (Very Important Bauble)
For a literal “edge” to your look, try the House of Harlow Five Stacked Jagged Rings.
For the celebrity favorite, the Leather Drop Necklace has been seen on Kim Kardashian, Kerri Washington, and more.
For sunshine even on the most cloudy days, take a gander at the Sunburst Station Necklace.

Gilles Marini and L’Occitane Grand Opening, San Francisco
He was that smoldering sexy “grass is greener” guy that Samantha Jones admired in the next door apartment in the first Sex and the City movie. That tall, dark, and handsome guy was Gilles Marini. That’s how I know who he is. The hot sultry scenes of him walking shirtless, tanned, and muscular are now ingrained as happy images in my thoughts forever. Anyways, let me wipe this drool off before I get it all over my keyboard.
Complete with orange flavored macaroons, mimosas, and champagne, L’Occitane threw a Grand Opening to remember at the Powell St. Boutique. Aside from the delicious appetizers and refreshments, the lovelies at the San Francisco Centre store were able to combine two things that we girls adore: Hot men and brand-spankin’ new luxurious skincare products.
Making an appearance at the San Francisco store was Gilles Marini, the latest spokesperson for the French skincare brand. He is without a doubt on our list of desirable male eye-candy and their latest holiday line “Fleur Cherie” is equally as swoon worthy.
Meeting the DWTS (Dancing With the Stars) hunk at the L’Occitane event a few weeks ago was no easy feet… He was in high demand, and definitely the man of the hour.
As we saw woman after woman fawning and asking for his autograph, we decided to take the liberty to avoid the crazy fandom exhibit and ventured the store to find the latest and greatest of L’Occitane’s new skincare line. Any L’Occitane lover knows that their products are absolutely luxurious. If you don’t, just head into one of their stores to get a whiff of their unforgettable aromas (pretty much the moment you walk in) and you can enjoy trying and sniffing any product your heart desires with their endless selection of samples. Their lotions, fragrances, and scrubs are always scented to perfection and always soothing and smoothing.
What is so amazing about the Fleur Cherie, aside from the unique, light, and delicious decadent orange blossom and black currant notes, is that it is perfectly packaged for the season of giving in a number of limited edition holiday packages. The unique orange and white boxes, trimmed in gold, makes picking out holiday gifts for the mom, sister, or mother-in-law convenient and gratifying.
My favorite? This adorable Fleur Cherie Jewel Lip Palette. This is GORGEOUS! This little gem contains two sparkly lip glosses (beige and pink) encased in an adorable vintage pocket watch inspired compact.
I was able to meet the hottie! Here are a few pics. You can see more on my facebook fanpage at www.facebook.com/thebeautybohemian.
Cutest Piggy Bank EVER – Found in Coco Rocha’s Apartment
At first glance it looks like “YSL” but upon further inspections it reads “You Saved LaRent” – Too cute!
I found this in the Vogue slideshow of supermodel Coco Rochas apartment. Here is the link to the entire thing: http://www.vogue.com/culture/article/inside-coco-rochas-apartment/#/gallery/apt-with-lsd-coco-rocha/5
Bag twins: Vanessa Hudgens
Yah! She sucks in the latest adpatation of Rent but V.Hudge and I are bag twins. Her boho-chic style is absolutey steal-worthy, too. Don’t you think?
Eat, Pray, Love – Julia Roberts at the New York City Premiere
OK. I’m excited. I’m more than excited. Yes. I am one of those girls that went absolutey ape-shit over Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, “Eat, Pray, Love.” I laughed and cried over that whole true-story like a typical chic-lit sucker and I loved every minute of it. Which is why I had to show you these:
When I heard about who was going to play Gilbert and the name Julia Roberts came up, I could not think of a more perfect actress for the part. She looks absolutely stunning at the Ziegfeld Theatre last night in New York City. Tailored shorts, a stunning blazer tuxedo jacket, structured strappy heels, and the bangles – oh! the bangles! On top of that mega-watt smile, this mommy of three looks jaw-dropping amazing.
Can’t wait to see the flick. For now I’ll just be watching the trailer:
And OH MY GOSH! I love that song: “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence + The Machine. The soundtrack is already kick-ass… OK. I’ll contain myself now.
Material Girl Collection: The Beauty Bohemian Picks (Clothing)
As you know Lourdes and Madonna have created Material Girl, which is headlined by Gossip Girl starlet, Taylor Momsen. I recently attended the launch at downtown Macy’s last Tuesday and pretty much went gaga over some of their stuff – which is sold exclusively online and at Macy’s on O’Farrel.
Here are my three favorite pieces of the (everything) under $40 line:
This Military Jacket is a great, versatile, way to add substance to the humdrum of daily dressing.
Since San Francisco Fashion Week, I’ve been coveting an A-line tulle skirt. Thank you, Madonna, for hearing my cosmic voice and turning my fashion wishes into a reality.
Lasty, this studded faux-leather, cropped motorcyle jacket. Due to SF’s ridiculous summer weather of freezing insanity - and to avoid dumpy, frumpy, puffy jackets - this is the perfect coat that is not only faux-leather (sometimes the idea of a real cowhide gives me the willies) but it’s also in a really great cut.
That’s it for now. I’ll be doing accessories soon. (And oh my! does Material Girl have an outstanding arsenal.)
Cheers, boho babes.
xo
Oh yes! And due to a conflict of schedule and mommy-demands, I toted my awesome 5 year-old son to the 3pm event. Here is a pic of us at the Photobooth. Enjoy!
